AI reshapes hiring in India’s banks

India’s banking sector is changing how it hires as artificial intelligence transforms fraud detection, customer service, and recruitment.

Private banks are reducing staff numbers while increasing spending on technology. This indicates a decline in routine positions and a rise in demand for professionals who can develop, oversee, and work alongside AI systems.

From traditional roles to AI-enabled work

AI is becoming increasingly important in areas such as fraud detection, credit underwriting, compliance, customer service, and real-time risk management. As banks embed artificial intelligence into core operations, employees in traditional banking roles are also likely to work more closely with automated systems.

Rohit Mahajan, Founder and CEO of plutos ONE, a fintech company serving banks, said banks are looking beyond conventional banking talent. “AI won’t replace banking professionals, it will redefine them,” he said, adding that the future banking workforce will need to deliver smarter, faster, and more inclusive financial services.

AI-enabled tools could support instant KYC verification, credit risk evaluation, multilingual customer communication, and personalized financial recommendations. That means employees in traditionally non-technical roles will increasingly need digital fluency and the ability to work effectively with AI tools.

Vikkas Goyal, Founder of VimanoTech, an AI technology company, said financial institutions are investing in professionals with expertise in AI, machine learning, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, data engineering, and intelligent automation to accelerate digital transformation. The most valuable professionals will be those who combine technical capability with problem-solving, business understanding, and adaptability.

Hiring becomes AI-driven

While banks are hiring for AI-related skills, artificial intelligence is also changing how they identify and evaluate candidates. Companies are moving away from hiring based solely on resumes, qualifications, and conventional experience. Instead, employers are placing greater emphasis on skills, adaptability, problem-solving, and the ability to learn.

“AI is fundamentally reshaping the way organisations approach hiring. Companies are now looking for people with the skills, abilities, and potential to grow, instead of just looking at their resumes and qualifications,” said Abhishek Pandit, Director of Evalis, an AI-powered hiring platform.

In banking, this shift is especially important as the sector faces rising cyber threats, increasingly complex financial crimes, and stricter regulatory requirements. Banks need professionals with sound judgment, ethical decision-making abilities, adaptability, and an understanding of regulatory frameworks.

This overlap is leading banks to retrain existing employees while hiring experts in new fields. For job seekers, technical skills are important, but their value depends on how well they align with industry knowledge and adaptability.

The challenge for banks is balancing efficiency gains from automation with the human expertise required for complex financial decisions. The future of banking jobs may depend less on whether AI replaces workers and more on how well banks restructure roles to combine human and machine strengths.
